The Dances

Each session is going to begin with a Grand Entry. The processional will begin with the Heart Beat drum group carrying their drums and singing "A Living Hoop." Following that you will see an Eagle Staff carrying the American flasgs, Indian Nation flags and other flags that lead the way to the dance area. After the flags a processional of special people and groups make their way into the dance area. Once everyone is inside of the dance area and with the spectators still standing, the flags are raise in accompaniment to the flag song. A song honoring the veterans called the Victory Dance then commences and at the conclusion of which the Grand Entry will have ended.

The Intertribal Dances segment is going to be an absolute blast. It is in this segment that you will have a chance to see all of the different styles of Pow Wow dancers and all of the different age groups dancing together. This is where you will have a great chance to observe and begin to understand the essential nature of Indian dancing. It is so interesting to watch each dancer move independently to the beat of the drum which creates a highly individual style. There is one exception to the normal dancing rule and that is called the "Ladies Choice." This is one of the few times that men and women have physical contact while dancing. The final phase involves Contest Dancing which divided into many categories. This segment is a fascinating display of six basic categories broken down into age categories. For the men it includes Traditional Dancing, Fancy Dancing and Grass Dancing. The women participate in Traditional Dancing, Fancy Shawl Dancing and Jingle Dress Dancing. Every tribe does their dancing a bit different but you are going to have a great time seeing them all on display.

There are some addition elements to the Pow Wow that we know you are going to enjoy as well. There will be traditional storytelling which will dazzle the audience and captivate the listeners. The storytellers will share the legacies, legends and histories of a distinguished and proud people. This is a great opportunity to learn about the significance of dance and music in the lives and culture of America's indigenous people. And if you would like to leave with a meaningful keepsake, you will have a chance to peruse the works of Native American craftsmen during the arts and crafts show.
