If you're looking for an event for the entire family, then get ready to get your pirate hats on, and jump to the nearest ship, because it's time for the Beach Pirate Festival! This annual event is held to fend off the pirates of the vast sea from invading Fort Myers. You'll witness large ships, hear big booms from cannons inland and at sea, and tons more.
This annual event hosts many forms of musical entertainment, pirate parades, the thieves' craft and costume market, children's and adults' costume contests, children's fishing tournaments, storytelling, scavenger hunts, pirate cruises, pub quests and rum tastings, as well as the epic fiery sea battle.
Normally, when you visit any sort of a re-enactment, you aren't allowed anywhere near cannons that are blasting giant booming sounds across the land. However, because of how this event is set up, you can literally be within 25 feet of the cannons to get the full extent of their awesome and might power. The reason for this exceptionally close encounter is simple: there aren't any projectiles within the cannon itself.
Expand your knowledge of local pirate lore and talk to the re-enactors. They'll be more than happy to not only tell you about the history and lore surround pirates in the Fort Myers area, but they'll also enjoy telling you while acting out parts of their stories too. Talk about a fun way to learn more about history, whether true or a fish tale.
If your bank is a little low and you don't want to splurge too much, then this event is still perfect for you and your family due to the $0 cost at most of the events during the festival. You'll need to travel to Old San Carlos Boulevard on Estero Island for the majority of the events. It is a three day event with something for everyone to enjoy! Bring your kids and their pet parrots too, and take an adventure on the high seas for a time.
