Tacoma Highland Games • Tacoma WA

When you have been hosting an event for almost 50 years, you have to be doing something right. And the two day event has grown to be tremendously popular in the Tacoma area. It all begins on Friday evening when good old Celtic entertainment abounds. This event also provides a great venue for clan organizations to share and exchange history and genealogy information. But, of course, most of the public attends the festivities because it is a very family friendly event that features amateur competition in traditional highland athletics, highland dance, piping and drumming. This is such an exciting event that you do not want to miss so make your plans now to attend the annual Tacoma Highland Games.

Schedule of Events

When a power packed festival like this, it truly is hard to know where to begin in terms of describing all that you will be able to see and enjoy. Early Saturday morning, get ready for the piping and drumming competition. Afterwards, you will have plenty to look at as you mosey over to the various clan tents and the British Isles' car show. But you don't want to miss the Adult Heavy Events Competition which will be a competition and demonstration of games that have been played for centuries. The competitors include both men and women from their twenties to their sixties and from every walk of life.

The premier event that you will be able to watch is the caber toss. A competitor must pick up a caber (similar to a telephone pole) and run and toss it so that it flips end over end and lands straight in front of the competitor at a 12 o'clock position. The toss is actually judged for accuracy not distance. The next event called weight for distance is a true test of strength. A competitor hurls a weight which can be 14, 28, 42 or 56 pounds as far as possible. The athlete spins to gain momentum and then releases the weight. But you are going to be absolutely blown away by the hammer. In this competition, ancient weapons of war are used and they come in various weights, either 12, 16 or 22 pounds. The weapon is tossed in an Olympic like fashion where severe rotation creates great momentum to the hammer and then it is released. A competitor is judged based on how far they can throw the hammer. Most of the athletes who compete in this event wear special hammer boots with bayonets or spikes so that they can maintain ground contact while they rotate. The event list also includes the stone which is similar to shot put only using an ordinary stone instead of a metal ball. The weight for height event incorporates attempting to throw a weight up and over a horizontal bar. The key to this event is not to stand and watch it come down. ANd last but not least, the sheaf is an activity derived from the ancient farming traditions of Scotland. This event entails using a modified pitch fork stuck into a weighted burlap sack and swung and tossed over a height standard. This event is a true crowd favorite.
